Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, or mammoplasty, is a procedure that enhances the size and shape of your breasts. While it won’t lift sagging breasts or bring them closer together, it’s a great option for those who want a fuller profile, have lost volume after pregnancy or nursing, or are looking to restore a natural look after breast reconstruction.

Reasons for Considering Breast Augmentation

  • Enhance body shape if breasts are too small.
  • Restore breast volume after pregnancy and nursing.
  • Improve symmetry by correcting differences in breast size.
  • Reconstruct breasts following a mastectomy or injury.*

What to Expect

The Procedure

Breast augmentation is a procedure that enhances the size and shape of your breasts by placing implants through a small incision. It’s usually done on an outpatient basis while you’re comfortably asleep under general anesthesia.

There are a few options for where the incision can be made: most commonly along the lower part of the breast, but sometimes in the armpit or around the areola. You and your surgeon will decide together which option is best for you during your consultation.

During the procedure, the breast tissue is lifted to create a pocket where the implant is placed, either under the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle. Implants are filled with either saline or silicone gel.

Recovery

After breast augmentation, rest and limited activity are important to support healing and speed recovery. Immediately after surgery, patients are placed in a post-operative surgical bra to protect the area and minimize breast movement. This bra will need to be worn for several weeks as you heal.

All patients experience some discomfort after surgery, but this can usually be managed effectively with oral medication. While complications are uncommon, following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions carefully helps ensure a smooth recovery.
