A body lift, also called a belt lipectomy or panniculectomy, is a procedure designed to lift and reshape sagging body contours. As we age, skin loses elasticity, which can cause the midsection and surrounding areas to lose their natural shape and firmness. This procedure removes excess skin and fat deposits, helping restore a smoother, more youthful appearance.
A body lift can target the lower torso and upper legs, including the abdomen, waist, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, and hips. Liposcution is often performed at the same time to further enhance body contouring results.
Reasons For Considering A Body Lift
- Reshape the mid-body for a smoother, more balanced contour.
- Correct sagging skin and fat caused by aging or significant weight loss.
- Restore the body after multiple pregnancies by addressing stretched skin and excess fat.
What to Expect
The Procedure
The exact body lift procedure is tailored to each patient’s body type and goals. In general, the surgery involves making an incision around the waist and lower back. Adjustments to the buttocks and thighs involve an incision at the upper border of the buttocks.
Excess skin is removed, along with underlying fat deposits, and the remaining skin is then tightened and sutured into its new position.
Recovery
After a body lift, rest and limited activity are important to support healing. Some swelling, discomfort, and mild pain are normal, and your doctor can prescribe medication to help manage it.
Patients are placed in an abdominal binder after surgery and typically have a drain to help with fluid removal. Most patients are able to resume all normal activities around six weeks after surgery. It can take up to a year for your body to fully adjust to the new abdominal shape, but with a healthy diet and regular exercise, the results are long-lasting and dramatic.
